Things to do Around Crillon le Brave

One of the best things about l'Amiradou is the total calm.  It is ok here not to have lots of things to do!  As a regular visitor said, "The minute I sit on this terrace and look out at Mont Ventoux, I feel the stress hissing out of the back of my neck, sort of like air escaping a balloon.  And instead of feeling stretch to bursting point, I feel like I can breathe with ease again."

The best days here are often ones spent lazily exploring the Provencal art de vivre and spending much time relaxing in l'Amiradou.  A day's outing can consist of as effortless an outing as sitting in a café in a nearby village watching the world go by, but if you'd like a little more activity, There are fabulous walks, great cycling, and driving excursions around the region.  There are wonderful weekly markets full of local produce, treasure hunting in local flea and antique markets, historic towns and villages and some of the world best vineyards on our doorstep.

You can find a charming weekly market every day of the week somewhere in the region.  Neighbouring Bedoin's market on Mondays are a firm favourite.  Great food is found everywhere.  Discover some highly rated restaurants, as well as some fabulous local secrets off the main visitor track.  At l'Amiradou, we can organise wonderful, true Provencale meals at home and provide cooking lessons with prior arrangement.

For the mildly to the very energetic, a gentle stroll around the village and neighbouring vineyards, or a cycle ride up nearby Mont Ventoux - a mainstay of the Tour de France should address all appetites.  There are also good golf courses nearby, tennis courts at hand in the village, horse-back riding on Mont Ventoux, kayaking on the Sorgues river, a tree-top walk at nearby Mormoiron, tree line adventures. off road touring, and much more.  In winter, come truffle hunting with our neighbouring villages!

Half-day and whole day driving trips can take in all of the main Provencal sites, from Châteauneuf du Pape and its vineyards, to Orange and Vaison la Romaine and their Roman antiquities, to trendy (and busy!) Gordes and the Lubéron. The bigger historic and culturally important cities of Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are both well worth a visit or two. We would be delighted to help you plan your exploration of the country around us.

As far back as the Roman times when the village was called Crillonium, there has been a settlement here. However, Crillon le Brave's modern history really begins in the 14th century when a leading Avignon family - the family des Balbes de Berton, acquired the feudal rights to the village, remaining at its head right up to the French Revolution.

The village takes its full name - Crillon le Brave, from the most legendary of the dukes that ruled it.  Louis des Balbes de Berton de Crillon or "Le Brave Crillon" (1541–1615).  Louis was one of Henri IV's fiercest, roughest and also most valiant generals.  During the French Wars of Religion in the late 16th century, he was covered with honours for his feats on the battlefield and his loyalty to the king. The same Crillon family gave its name to the famous Hôtel de Crillon in Paris.

At the end of the 19th century Crillon-le-Brave was a prosperous village of 800 inhabitants served by several cafés, bars and stores. There was even a local philharmonic society.  By the beginning of the 20th century, however, the village began a long slow decline.  Two wars and a failing water supply left the village almost abandoned and many of its houses fell into ruins.  As the region was rediscovered as a destination for holiday makers in the last five decades, new inhabitants have brought new life to the old stones.  Today's Crillon le Brave has once again become a lively village.

Like most of the buildings within the old village walls and surrounding the church, l'Amiradou has its origins in the 16th and 17th centuries.  Originally a farmer's abode, the animals lived on the bottom most level while hay was stored in the level where we find the swimming pool, salons and dining rooms today.  And while l'Amiradou has evolved with the village and has been updated to embrace modern lifestyles, the heart and spirit of a true Provence, whose history this country house has stood witness to over the centuries, still remains l'Amiradou's lingering charm.

There is no shortage of wonderful restaurants in the area.  A wide choice of restaurants and cafes to charm you await.
